Tuition & Types of Aid

See if you qualify for financial aid.

The Office of Financial Aid will work closely with you to help you identify and secure every form of aid for which you are eligible. Your financial aid package may contain a combination of some of the following types of aid in order to help you meet the cost of attendance:

You may only receive financial aid in an amount up to (and not in excess of) your cost of attendance.

What is my Cost of Attendance?

Your cost of attendance (also called a student budget) is made up of both direct costs and indirect costs:

  • Direct costs: Direct costs include fixed expenses such as tuition and student fees that are charged by DU and appear on your student bill.
  • Indirect costs: Books, personal expenses and transportation fees make up some of the indirect costs which won't show up on your DU bill, but are nonetheless part of your overall cost of attendance.

As a law student, your cost of attendance will vary depending on your intended enrollment.

If you apply for aid, your Financial Aid Award Notification will specify the current cost figures (which vary annually) and the factors that determine your cost and aid. A student's cost of attendance can be increased on a case-by-case basis for additional costs--including the cost of tuition for a credit overload, a new computer, or childcare, etc.--by completing a Budget Adjustment Form.

Please note: Eligibility for financial aid for the summer term is limited, and will be evaluated during the spring term prior to summer enrollment.

Enrollment Verification

First-Year JD Students: Students in their first year of the JD program have a set curriculum. All day students are enrolled in 15 credits/semester and all evening students are enrolled in 11 credits/semester.

Continuing JD Students: After you complete 30 semester hours, you have more flexibility in the number of credits you may take. Your cost of attendance will need to be adjusted if you take less than 12 credits as a day student and less than 8 credits as an evening student.

Master's and JD Students: We verify your enrollment at the end of the 100% add/drop period of each semester. If you enroll in less or more credits than anticipated in your cost of attendance, your budget will be adjusted to reflect your actual enrollment and you may owe money back to the University. If your current cost of attendance is not accurate after you register for classes, please submit a Budget Adjustment Form to ensure you will receive the correct amount of financial aid for that semester.
