DU celebrated Earth Month in April 2011

DU held events nearly every day during the month April to celebrate Earth Month. And on April 22, 2011, the DU Sustainability Committee, in partnership with the DU Environmental Team, presented a one-day event of great importance to DU students and the Denver community: DU Earth Day Summit. The DU Earth Day Summit featured John Fielder, renowned Colorado photographer, Stu Galvis, Climate Change Project, and Johny 5 from the Flobots.

DU receives an A- on College Sustainability Report Card

The College Sustainability Report Card is the only independent evaluation of campus and endowment sustainability activities at colleges and universities in the US and Canada. In contrast to the academic focus on sustainability in research and teaching, this report card examines universities as institutions, through the lens of sustainability. DU is proud to have received an A- grade. We continue to work hard on a variety of sustainability efforts.

DU hosted the Rocky Mountain Sustainability Summit in 2011

The Rocky Mountain Sustainability Summit was hosted by the University of Denver on February 17-18, 2011. The conference was geared to students, faculty, and staff at higher education institutions, as well as business people, non-profit workers, and government employees throughout the Rocky Mountain region. Sessions and keynote speakers focused on sustainability issues in higher education, making the business case for sustainability, educating on environmental justice issues, moving from talk to action in the area of sustainability on campus, focusing on regional sustainability issues, and much more. DU Wins the EPA Green Power Challenge for the Sunbelt Conference

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced on April 19, 2010 that the University of Denver won the 2009-2010 Individual Conference Champion for using more green power than any other school in the Sun Belt Conference. Excerpt from the EPA's news release:

" University of Denver beat its conference rivals by purchasing nearly 16 million kWh of green power, representing 33 percent of the school's annual electricity usage. University of Denver purchases renewable energy certificates (RECs) from NextEra Energy Resources, which helps to reduce the environmental impacts associated with the campus's electricity use. EPA estimates that University of Denver's purchase of nearly 16 million kWh of green power is equivalent to the CO 2 emissions from the electricity use of more than 1,000 average American homes each year or has the equivalent impact of reducing the CO 2 emissions of more than 2,000 passenger cars annually. The Sun Belt Conference's collective green power purchase was more than 24 million kWh."

Using the B-Cycle Stations at DU

You may have noticed the B-cycle bike sharing stations recently installed on campus and at the University Light Rail stop. These stations may be helpful in your daily routine - getting to/from work, different areas on campus, running errands, grabbing lunch, or getting to events in the downtown area during the day. To encourage students to give B-cycle a try, you can receive $20 off the purchase of a $65 annual B-cycle membership. Click here for more information (PDF).

DU's Bursar's Office is Going Green

Beginning July 1, 2010, the Bursar's Office no longer prints and mails paper bills to students. Email is the delivery mechanism. Sending the bills through email reduces the amount of paper by close to 100,000 sheets per year.

DU awarded one of four 2010 efficieny partner awards

DU was a host institution for the AASHE Conference October 10, 2010 (10.10.10 in Denver!)

The Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) 2010 conference theme is "Campus Initiatives to Catalyze a Just and Sustainable World." There were approximately 100 presentation sessions with over 500 speakers. The focus was on the impact of the 'global campus' and social justice within the field of sustainability. There were tours of campuses, LEED certified buildings, the National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL) and much more. Visit the AASHE conference website to register.
