What does your current position entail?
I am responsible for teaching upper and lower level classes in the Department of Communication. I am also responsible for redesigning the major.
How did you get your current position?
I saw the position at the Chronicle of Higher Ed. I thought I was a good fit for it and applied.
In relation to graduation, when did you start the job search and when did you secure your position?
I started the job search in December, which is relatively late. Ideally, one should start looking for positions early in the fall. I was able to secure a position in mid-March.
In regards to the job search process, did anything surprise you?
The only thing that really surprised me was that campus visits can be pleasant, but are extremely stressful. I knew I would have a full day, but it was certainly more stressful than I had first envisioned.
What recommendations do you have for current students?
Taylor your CV to the type of job you will be looking for. If you want to teach, make sure you have some experience before applying to a teaching tenure track position.
Which aspects of your background have been most helpful in your current position?
Having teaching experience across different types of institutions. That is being tremendously helpful.
If you were in your graduate program again, what would you do differently, if anything?
I would try to do a better job in adjusting to the quarter system, specifically when it comes to final papers for the different courses. I would have continued to work on them more persistently.
