DU exhibit highlights Japanese American Internment Camp
Exhibit shows work of groups trying to preserve the WWII internment camp
The University of Denver Museum of Anthropology exhibit “Negotiating Preservation” opens May 15 in Sturm Hall and highlights the various groups trying to preserve Amache, the WWII Japanese American internment camp in Granada, CO.
“Many residents of Colorado are unaware of the presence of an internment camp in Colorado,” says Jennifer Otto, a second year graduate student and curator of the exhibit.
Otto’s exhibit will highlight the efforts of preservation groups, including the local Granada high school students from the Amache Preservation Society, members of the Japanese American community and residents of the city of Granada.
An opening reception will be held Thursday, May 15 from 5 to 7 p.m. in Sturm Hall 102. During the reception, Otto will lead a gallery talk to discuss the exhibit in more detail.
Japanese-Americans, including former inmates, will tour Amache July 3 and 6 where University of Denver anthropologists are conducting research to preserve the site. The tours are part of the Los Angeles-based Japanese American National Museum (JANM) National Conference in Denver July 2 - 6.
The University of Denver Museum of Anthropology invites all JANM conference attendees to a dessert reception and open house on July 3, from 7-9 p.m. In particular, the University extends a special welcome for the July 3 event to Japanese-American DU alumni. “Negotiating Preservation” will be on display through July 11.
This Archaeology and Historic Preservation Month event is sponsored by a grant from the Colorado Historical Society, the U.S. Department of the Interior, and the Colorado Archaeological Society.
