University of Denver launches new think tank
Center for New Politics and Policy replaces Center for African American Policy as a more inclusive and encompassing center for the analysis of public policy and politics
DENVER—The University of Denver today announced the establishment of the Center for New Politics and Policy (CNPP), a new nonprofit, nonpartisan operation encouraging greater public discourse, civic participation and policy analysis in the 21st century.
The CNPP was formerly known as the Center for African American Policy (CAAP), which was founded in 1998 by state Sen. Peter Groff, president of the Colorado Senate and DU instructor. Groff remains the executive director of CNPP as the new center replaces CAAP and its flagship Web site, Blackpolicy.org., which had become a leading repository of African American political and public policy information. The new, more inclusive think thank will host an equally dynamic Web site, www.newpolicycenter.org.
CNPP will offer a unique blend of politics, policy, academia and public service. It is being formed to encourage broader public discourse and a more encompassing flow of information on domestic and international issues, policies and trends. The goal of the center is to work for positive change through vigorous intellectual exchange, fresh political perspective and an aggressive, forward-thinking study of critical public policy in the 21st century.
With a diverse and reputable team of experts, CNPP projects include
The Groff/Ellison Political Report—a reputable daily blog and intellectual journal of analysis named after Groff, executive director of CNPP and Charles D. Ellison, chief advisor and senior fellow at CNPP.
The New School—a weekly political program on Sirius XM Satellite Radio, replacing “Blackpolicy” and “The Power” on XM channels 110, 130 and 169.
The Brooks Foreign Policy Review—a new blog on www.newpolicycenter.org named after Chief Editor and new CNPP Senior Fellow Webster Brooks III. Brooks is an expert in international affairs and founder of the U.S./Iran Peace Project.
The Virtual Presidency—an evolving virtual presidential library at www.virtualpresidency.org chronicling the activities of the incoming Obama administration and future presidents.
Policy Forums—a periodic series of public forums on a wide range of critical domestic and foreign policy issues facilitated by CNNP in Washington, D.C.
Educational workshops—youth focused workshops on civics and political participation as part of CNPP’s focus on community service and advocacy for civic education.
Political analysts—CNPP continues to grow an impressive stable of public policy experts, including senior fellows Charles D. Ellison (public policy, media, politics) and Webster Brooks III (foreign policy); and visiting fellows D.L. Chandler (politics, media, Social commentary), Dr. Rickie Keys (health, economics, finance), and Tamara Robinson (public policy). CNPP will announce new fellows over the coming weeks.
“One purpose of the Center for New Politics and Policy is to capture the enthusiasm and energy of this past election,” said Groff. “But more importantly, we need to refresh and reinvigorate our mission as public intellectuals of the 21st century, seeking to enhance the common good.”
