About the Department
The provost is responsible for maintaining and enhancing the academic quality, intellectual inquiry, and research, creative, and scholarly activities across the University. The provost provides the strategic planning and budgeting for the University and oversees all academic, research, and related units of the university.
As the chief academic officer of the University, the provost provides leadership, with comprehensive administrative responsibility for colleges, schools, divisions, departments, libraries, centers and institutes, faculty, staff and students, as well as for those units that serve the University's academic needs.
In carrying out these responsibilities, the provost works directly with the deans of the colleges, schools, and divisions, the faculties, the vice provosts, and with other members of the provost's staff. Other responsibilities include:
- Monitoring and assessing the implementation of the University vision, values, mission and goals, and providing measurable demonstrations of progress and achievement to the University community, the Chancellor, and the Board of Trustees.
- Preparing the annual budget for the University, and assuring that budgeting and financial planning is inextricably wedded to academic ideals, priorities and goals.
- Promoting academic excellence in graduate, undergraduate and non-traditional curricula and programs, both in-place and proposed.
- Encouraging, fostering the environment for, and supporting academic scholarship and research as intellectual activity eminently worthwhile and valuable in itself.
- Promoting the integration of academic scholarship and research with teaching and learning both inside and outside the classroom.
- Promoting shared governance, collegiality, community, fairness and respect among administration, faculty, staff and students.
