In April 1998, the VIP Program received a three-year grant from The Coca-Cola Foundation's "Keeping Kids in School" Program. This allowed VIP to expand its efforts at Denver West High School. Summer Link to College was developed as a week-long summer residential program for rising high school juniors as an introduction to college life and university courses, as well as community and cultural experiences. The students attend classes designed for them taught by University professors, motivational workshops and education and cultural field trips during their stay in the residence halls a DU.
Today, participants are from our partner schools (and schools in relationship with VIP). They are selected through an application process which includes an essay and teach recommendation. The partner schools are Denver West High School, Abraham Lincoln High School, Denver Center for International Studies, Denver School of Science and Technology, and Pinnacle Charter School. Summer Link continues as one of VIP's most popular programs.
This year, Summer Link has expanded to 59 students from our partner schools and included several students from East High School and North High School. The wide diversity of students enhanced the experience for everyone and provided opportunities to form friendships beyond the school boundaries.
