Background Check Information

The following is information that you need to know about performing background checks on your final candidate(s). If you have questions regarding background checks and the procedures, feel free to call our staff for more information. All final candidates must have a background check completed before being extended an offer!  The exception to this is the Workman's Compensation check, which can only be done after the person has been offered the position.

The following are areas which must be checked, depending on the nature of the position and it's specific duties.

Criminal:A criminal check will be done for EVERY position.

Credit, Motor Vehicle Report, Workman's Compensation:These will be checked based on the job requirements of the position.

Past Employment, Education: These two checks are optional. It is strongly advised that these checks be completed either by the department or by Human Resources.

Key information regarding proper procedures

  • Background check forms with disclosure & authorization materials and workers' compensation release forms will be sent to you by Human Resources, or you may downloaded them directly from the web.   They are also found on the DU Forms Zip File.
  • All Background Check Forms must be signed by the applicant before checks can begin.
  • All department information, manager name, and signature need to be complete. Not having this information will delay the processing of the check.
  • Pay close attention to the information below explaining what needs to be done to complete certain background checks (e.g., whether the form needs to be notarized; how long the background check will take; what costs are involved).
  • You may have to perform checks in several states depending on how long the person has been in the state of Colorado. The Criminal Record prices for each state are available for viewing online.  Worker's Compensation History & Driving Record rate sheets are available by calling HR, at X17420.
