Student Health Insurance

Most students enrolled in on-campus coursework are required to carry personal health (medical) insurance coverage to help support and protect their own and community health. The University offers a convenient plan designed specifically for students - the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP). While the University recommends SHIP coverage for all students, participation in SHIP is not required; you can request a SHIP waiver by providing proof of adequate alternate insurance by the posted deadlines.

Details about the Student Health Insurance Plan, waiver options, and other on-campus medical and mental healthcare resources are available through the Health & Counseling Center.

If you are unsure if you are automatically enrolled in the Student Health Insurance Program, please contact the Office of Student Billing.

  • How to Participate

Students in eligible programs may choose to participate in SHIP:

After you have registered for upcoming/current term classes, sign in to MyDU and select the following options:

    1. Student Resources
    2. Records and Requests
    3. Accept or Waive Health Insurance

Please note, enrollment requests must be submitted in accordance with the applicable deadline. If you have specific questions regarding the plan benefits or coverage, please contact the Health & Counseling Center at (303) 871-2205 or at insurance@du.edu.

  • Waiver Process

Students who can provide proof of adequate alternate insurance may waive participation in SHIP:

After you have registered for fall classes, sign in to MyDU and select the following options:

    1. Student Resources
    2. Records and Requests
    3. Accept or Waive Health Insurance.

The online system will then offer any applicable options for health fee and insurance.

Please note, waiver requests must be submitted in accordance with the applicable deadline. If you have specific questions regarding the SHIP waiver requirements, please contact the Health & Counseling Center at (303) 871-2205 or at insurance@du.edu.

Student Health & Counseling Fee

The Student Health & Counseling Fee is assessed each term for most DU students and does not cover individual services or insurance coverage. Instead, it funds prevention, wellness, and crisis support available to all students, including 24/7 medical and mental health consultations, Health Promotion programs, and no-cost services through CAPE (the Center for Advocacy, Prevention, & Empowerment). It may also lower the cost of care at the Health & Counseling Center.

Other than exceptions identified by the Health & Counseling Center, the Health & Counseling Fee is mandatory.

More information on the Health & Counseling Fee, including the resources the Health & Counseling Fee supports and provides, is available through the Health & Counseling Center.

  • How to Participate

Most students are automatically billed the Health & Counseling Fee for the each academic term, based on their academic enrollment. No action is necessary.

Eligible students who do not have the fee assessed (based on program type), but still wish to receive the service benefits, can manually enroll via the Health & Counseling Center. Please note, DU students in completely online or certificate programs are not eligible to enroll in SHIP or receive services at the Health & Counseling Center.

Please note, DU students in completely online or certificate programs are not eligible to enroll in SHIP or receive services at the Health & Counseling Center.

  • Make a Decision

While the Health & Counseling Fee is mandatory for most students, students enrolled in certain Graduate and Professional programs may be eligible to opt-down or opt-out of the Health & Counseling Fee. Please see the Health & Counseling Center for information on which programs have the option to opt-down or opt-out of the Health & Counseling Fee, and instructions for eligible students.
