Travel & Visitors
We're excited to welcome people back to our campus, and to have our students and faculty return to some travel activities as well. However, we also recognize that our best chance to remain face to face and not have an outbreak on campus is to control the number of potentially asymptomatic individuals in our community and to reduce the number of days those individuals could be spreading the virus without knowledge.
With that in mind, we've developed protocols for visitors, as well our own international and domestic travelers intended to reduce or minimize the risk of transmission during asymptomatic phases as well as to protect faculty, students and staff from situations that present risk as a function of job responsibility. These policies are essential for the University to control the virus within our community, especially because more than 70% of our students come from out of state or country.
Domestic travel for University business is now permitted provided that it is budgeted and approved. At this time, all expenditures anticipated at or above $2,500 must be approved in advance. All travel must be booked through the Concur Travel and Expense system or directly with Christopherson Business Travel.
As of July 22, 2021, the University of Denver has adopted the following policy regarding international travel: Students, faculty and staff who have verified records of full vaccination against COVID-19 within their MyHealth record may travel internationally as part of University programs or for University business; however, country specific risk levels will determine processes and requirements. Students, faculty and staff who do not have verified records of full vaccination against COVID-19 are not permitted to travel as part of University programs or on University business.

A seven day quarantine is required before returning to campus following travel either internationally or to restricted states for individuals who are not fully vaccinated (two weeks following final vaccination dose). Those who are fully vaccinated and have their vaccination records documented in MyHealth are not required to quarantine.
The Office of International Education is moving forward with many DU partner program and unaffiliated study abroad programs for the fall term.

Restricted Travel States
Travel or extended time (12 days or more) away from campus requires a 7-day quarantine and negative test before return for anyone who is not fully vaccinated.
Can I travel domestically for official University business?

Can I travel internationally for official University business?
Note: All employees and students intending to travel abroad for DU business and academic related purposes must be vaccinated and at least two weeks past their final COVID-19 vaccination. You must upload documentation of your vaccination status to your MyHealth portal at least two weeks prior to departure.
The following DU international travel guidelines are in alignment with CDC guidance:
Employee International Travel:
- Employees may conduct DU approved international travel to any country that the CDC has designated a COVID-19 risk level 3 or lower without completing an additional risk management review process.
- Employees who wish to travel to a country that the CDC has designated a COVID-19 risk level 4, must receive essential travel approval from their academic dean or division leader and connect with DU’s International Travel Risk Analyst before departure to review plans and available resources.
- All employees must submit a Request in Pioneer Travel and Expense for all DU-approved international travel before departure, and if funded by the University, employees must book travel through Pioneer Travel and Expense or by contacting Christopherson Business Travel directly.
- All employees will need to contact email@example.com to request a COVID acknowledgement form and return a signed copy two weeks before departure.
Student International Travel:
- Undergraduate experiential travelers who wish to travel to a country that the CDC has designated a COVID-19 risk level 1 or 2 are no longer required to submit an international travel risk petition and receive approval from the International Travel Committee and the Provost.
- Undergraduate experiential travelers who wish to travel to a country that the CDC has designated a COVID-19 risk level 3 or 4 will need to submit an international travel risk petition and receive approve from the International Travel Committee and the Provost before departure.
- Graduate experiential travelers who wish to travel to a country that the CDC has designated a COVID-19 risk level 3 or lower are no longer required to submit an international travel risk petition and receive approval from the International Travel Committee and the Provost.
- Graduate experiential travelers who wish to travel to a country that the CDC has designated a COVID-19 risk level 4 will need to submit an international travel risk petition and receive approve from the International Travel Committee and the Provost before departure.
- All experiential travelers must complete an Experiential Learning Registration in DU Passport at least two weeks before departure.
- Students participating in Office of International Education (OIE) programs are approved to travel as these programs are continuously reviewed and approved on a case-by-case basis.
- For faculty-directed programs, program leaders are required to submit a program proposal in DU Passport, and all programs will be reviewed and approved on a case-by-case basis by the International Travel Committee and the Provost.
All international travelers need to remain aware that the CDC is continuously evaluating the COVID-19 situation abroad and may change their country risk level designations at any time. Conditional approval will be granted and conditions will be evaluated 30 days before intended departure date. All travel approval is subject to further review should the risk level designations change any time before departure. Also, travelers should know that many countries continue to implement new entry requirements, quarantine periods, internal restrictions, and testing requirements. It is essential for travelers to understand the landscape in their destination country and monitor changes so that they are prepared for any logistical challenges that they may encounter.
All international travelers are required to test following international travel. Recommended testing upon arrival and again 5-7 days following travel. Individuals who are not fully vaccinated (two weeks following final vaccination dose) are required to complete a seven day quarantine before returning to campus following international travel. Those who are fully vaccinated and have their vaccination records documented in MyHealth are not required to quarantine.

Can I be reimbursed for airfare if my University-related meeting/conference was canceled?
The preferred and best methods of purchasing DU-related travel are Pioneer Travel & Expense (Concur), the University’s dedicated online booking system, or Christopherson Business Travel (CBT), the University’s contracted travel management company. The preferred methods offer many benefits (cost savings, ease of use, time savings, traveler support and duty of care), but at a time of significant travel disruption using these recommended tools will ensure you’ll have no issues if travel is canceled.
University-related travel should be booked through the Pioneer Travel and Expense System (Concur). If you booked your own travel outside of this system, you may be reimbursed subject to departmental approval. Travel that has been canceled for March and April due to COVID-19 coronavirus concerns should be submitted in an expense report to Pioneer Travel & Expense (Concur) along with documentation of the cancelation and any credits that were received. If the University reimburses you for canceled travel, the flight credit should be used for future University travel.

How should I book official University travel?
The University recommends all future travel for faculty and staff be booked through the online travel booking tool (Pioneer Travel and Expense), or by contacting Christopherson Business Travel directly at (800)-285-3603 or DUTravel@cbtravel.com. Can students arrive in the state and quarantine with family instead of on campus?
I can’t afford to quarantine in a hotel or other lodging. Are there alternatives?
Yes. The university identified partners to offer low-cost alternatives to members of our community for quarantine and isolation. Please contact COVIDcoordinator@du.edu for more information.
To welcome visitors to campus, we have created a visitor protocol. Either a host requests access for a visitor and provides the visitor with a link to a symptom questionnaire and acknowledgment of risk statement about the risks of COVID-19 and what the University and individual can do to mitigate this risk, or the host has the visitor register for a longer visit by obtaining a temporary visitor pass. Campus communities with regular visitors (e.g., clinics, research labs, admissions) will have standing approved processes for welcoming visitors. One-time visitors do not require approval, but they do require a host and the visitor survey.
Admission Tours & Information Sessions
Undergraduate Admissions is hosting in-person visits and will continue to do so under Alert Levels Clear, Green and Blue. Under higher levels (Yellow, Orange, Red and Purple) tours may revert to virtual options, or more safety protocols may be required. Guests must register in advance; drop-ins will be registered on site.
