From Polarization to Pluralism: Renewing the Foundations of Democracy
Political and cultural polarization is rising across America, weakening the trust, free inquiry, and civic cooperation that democratic life depends on. In our current climate, the United States faces a defining question: how do we renew the principles of free expression and pluralism that sustain a flourishing society?
Across the country, leaders and organizations are advancing free speech, civil discourse, civic engagement, academic freedom, and pluralism. The problem is not a lack of effort. The problem is fragmentation.
The John and Sandy Miller National Academy for Free Expression and Pluralism at the University of Denver is a national connective center: a home for dispersed efforts, leading voices, and promising practices. Its role is not to replace what already works, but to connect, test, translate, and scale.
DU is both the Miller Academy’s home and its first laboratory: a place where ideas are tested, refined, and made useful to institutions across the country.
Why This Work Matters Now
Freedom of thought and expression are foundational to democracy and essential to the pursuit of knowledge, discovery, and progress. Their purpose is not only to protect individual rights, but to enable citizens to learn from one another through open inquiry, intellectual humility, and a shared commitment to civic life.
Pluralism is what emerges when people engage constructively across real differences. It is not simply polite conversation; it is the discipline of working together on shared problems despite genuine disagreement. Rooted in the American ideal of e pluribus unum — out of many, one — pluralism offers a pathway from polarization toward a stronger, freer, and more cohesive society.
The University of Denver gave me far more than degrees. It gave me a place to learn how to think, to grow, and to learn from people with different experiences and perspectives. Sandy and I want future generations of students to have that same opportunity—a place at DU where they can pursue knowledge freely, encounter ideas that challenge their own, and learn to disagree thoughtfully and constructively. Those are habits they will carry with them for a lifetime.
The Miller Academy Leads in Three Ways
Strengthen the National Movement
The Miller Academy looks to the DU community and beyond to spotlight and connect exemplary work across American society—in higher education, culture and the arts, journalism, technology, business, philanthropy, civic life, and public institutions. It serves as connective tissue among leading organizations and emerging initiatives, helping identify what works, elevate promising models, convene serious leaders, and support collaboration across sectors.
Support Education Across America
Higher education is one of the most important testing grounds for free expression and pluralism. The Miller Academy supports colleges and universities working to strengthen free inquiry, academic freedom, viewpoint diversity, and constructive disagreement in daily campus life through convenings, applied scholarship, curricular and co-curricular tools, student and faculty fellows, peer-learning networks, and practical resources for campus leaders.
Lead Through the University of Denver
National leadership begins at home. The Miller Academy helps DU become a national model for free expression and pluralism in practice — serving DU students, faculty, and staff while bringing leading programs, partners, and national speakers to campus. DU is both the Miller Academy’s home and its first laboratory: a place where ideas are tested, refined, and made useful to institutions across the country.
Founding Executive Director
Mary Kate Cary leads the Miller Academy as its founding executive director, bringing experience from Think Again at the University of Virginia, the Campus Discourse Project, and leadership with Heterodox Academy, to name a few.
Our goal at the Miller Academy is to create an open environment for free expression and pluralism in our American democracy, centered in higher education and growing from there. We want to expand inquiry, rigorous debate, and free speech across the arts, journalism, technology, religion, and more. This is why some of the most important minds across our national community are joining us in this project at DU.
