Railroad Suicide Prevention - Persuade

How to Persuade

  • Listen to the problem

  • Seek to understand the problem

  • Suicide is not the problem, it is a solution to a problem

  • Do not judge

  • Offer hope

  • Normalize feelings

Say:

  • "I want you to live."

  • "I’m on your side."

  • "I’m willing to listen."

  • "We can get through this."

  • "I can help you get help."

Ask questions:

  • "Will you come with me to get help?"

  • "Will you let me help you get help?"

  • "Will you talk with me about other possible solutions?"

  • "Will you promise not to kill yourself until we have exhausted all avenues of help?"

  • "Who else might help? Family? Parents? Brothers? Sisters? Clergy?"
