To host a transparent scientific exchange on the evolution of the Shared Socioeconomic Pathways—including their relationship to other futures-oriented frameworks such as the Natures Futures Framework used in biodiversity research and the Sustainable Development Goals—the journal Futures is hosting a Special Issue “Socioeconomic futures frameworks for motivating actions for sustainability.” The global research community is invited to engage in this exchange by contributing independent analyses, proposals for a framework (or its components or elements), and diverse perspectives. The objective is to help build a consensus that is scientifically sound and broadly representative. To encourage rapid dialogue across different fields and knowledge traditions in futures studies, authors are invited to share their submissions simultaneously as preprints on SSRN (a free service connected to Futures).
Contributions may take the form of full-length articles or short communications and should further develop the intellectual, ethical, or empirical foundations of futures inquiry in either interdisciplinary studies, humanities and social sciences, or in practice and policy settings.
