Story Mosaic Series: Unsung Heroes, Mentors for a Moment

About

The Story Mosaic Committee is excited to invite you to their third event on Friday, May 10 from 2:30pm-3:30pm at Community Commons 1700! This quarter, we are thrilled to collaborate with 4D and have our theme be Unsung Heroes: Mentors of a Moment. Storytellers will share about a mentorship moment and thank their mentor for their guidance. Click Here to Sign up as a Storyteller!

The Story Mosaic is a cross-campus story telling initiative aimed at bringing the DU Community together to tell, listen and learn from powerful stories. Social norms have taught us that men should not be emotional or vulnerable. Instead, men ought to be tough and hide their emotions. Storytellers will share their experiences, understandings, and lessons learned along their journey to living authentically. We are excited to see you there!

Community Film Screening: Snapshots of Confinement

Community Film Screening: Snapshots of Confinement

Date: May 2

Time: 5:00pm-7:30pm (Please arrive before 6:00pm when the film starts)

Location: Margery Reed Hall, Reiman Theater

During World War II more than 120,000 Japanese Americans were forcibly removed from their homes and confined in a series of camps managed by the War Relocation Authority. The US government initially imposed policies that limited the use of cameras by Japanese Americans in confinement sites, while simultaneously utilizing photography for propaganda. Despite the ban, Japanese American families found ways to document their lives. Join us for this screening of Snapshots of Confinement, a film highlighting how these photos reveal stories of community and resilience, transforming how this dark history is understood today. A Q&A session following the film will feature film participants, Derek Okubo & Marge Taniwaki, as well as director and producer, DU Professor, Esteban Gómez.

Event Sponsors: C+V, IRISE, and CCESL

Past Event: C+V Special Edition Community Talk: Israel & Gaza

About

The violence that is taking place in Israel, Palestine, and Gaza is incredibly tragic and painful – it is hard to even find the words to explain it. Our thoughts are with all of those affected by this conflict. We know that this has impacted, both directly and indirectly, many in our community. We invite you to listen to this Zoom panel of DU community members from across the University of Denver who engage in meaningful discussion and learning. We explore the human impact, recent events, and geopolitical context.

Our goal was to create a space for empathy and understanding, where participants can gain insight into the perspectives of those affected and engage in constructive reflection and learning.

About

The Community + Values Team is excited to officially launch the DU Story Mosaic: Sharing Stories, Building Community,’ a storytelling initiative at DU. Join us on October 11th! Check out the information below to learn more and RSVP. Everyone is welcome!

Over the past year, our C+V team, C+V Steering Committee, and a cross-campus planning committee has been discussing ways for us as a community to learn from one another and practice reflection in our lives – with these goals in mind, we are excited to officially launch the ‘DU Story Mosaic: Sharing Stories, Building Community,’ a storytelling initiative at DU. The DU Story Mosaic is a cross-campus collaboration that recognizes the incredible power of storytelling. Modeled after the Human Library and building on our C+V Community Voices work, this initiative aims to bring together the entire DU Community to engage in a meaningful exchange of our unique stories. Our hope is that community members listen, learn from each other, and practice reflection to experience personal growth in the process. We also seek to inspire change within our organization through storytelling.

The DU Story Mosaic will offer participants the opportunity to share stories through a variety of creative expressions, such as one-on-one and group conversations, spoken word, art, and poetry, both publicly and anonymously, to cultivate an embodied community experience where everyone can feel safe to be vulnerable and their authentic selves.

This fall, we will be hosting an in-person story telling event for approximately 30-40 community members, including students, faculty, staff, and alums (details below). We invite any DU community member to join us for the event! Attendees can either share a story as a storyteller or RSVP as a listener participant. Please don’t hesitate to sign up to share your story as we would be honored if you do! We hope you can join us, but if you can’t, don’t worry, there will be plenty of opportunities to join us this coming academic year!

DU Story Mosaic Fall 2023 Event: Sharing Stories: Building Community

  • Storyteller Logistic Details: If you want to be a storyteller, we would be honored! You can share a story that is between 5 – 10 minutes each. Storytellers can share any story that they would like around the theme. During a test soft launch event this past August, community members shared personal anecdotes about their lives leading up to DU, what led them to DU, how their experiences shape how they work with others at DU, and more.
