For many high school seniors, deciding where to go to college is one of the first major life decisions they face. Choosing the campus that will become their new home for four years comes with challenges: There are countless options, it's a serious financial commitment, and it can have a major impact on future career opportunities.

Beyond those challenges, though, are the myriad chances for growth, exploration, adventure, fun, friendship, learning, and thriving that come with a university education. While every school offers a unique combination of benefits, we think the University of Denver has a special blend of educational excellence and exceptional student experiences. Here are some of our favorite things about studying at DU.

Location, location, location

The beautiful DU campus—a walkable haven made up of both historic and modern buildings connected by winding brick pathways—sits in the heart of Denver. The Mile High City boasts a thriving cultural scene, top pro sports teams, a strong business community, and over 300 days of sunshine per year. Moreover, the iconic Rocky Mountains lie just beyond the edge of the city and are visible from multiple spots on campus, putting outdoor adventures within easy reach.

Holistic growth

At DU, students do much more than take classes. The University's holistic approach to learning is called the 4D Experience, which refers to four dimensions of growth: deepening intellect, developing well-being, discovering character, and designing careers and lives of purpose. It's a four-year process in which education changes from transactional to transformational.

International opportunities

More than 70% of DU students study abroad at some point during their college careers. The University makes the experience accessible with a full complement of advising and financial planning resources. And thanks to DU Partner Programs with about 100 study abroad programs and universities across the world, paying for a study abroad experience is the same as paying to study on campus—the same financial aid applies.

A schedule full of flexibility

Only about 5% of colleges and universities use the quarter system, and DU is one of them. With four 10-week quarters instead of two longer semesters, classes move at a fast pace and are offered more often. Plus, opportunities abound for interterm and summer courses, and double or triple majoring is easy.

Close faculty relationships

With an 11-to-1 student-faculty ratio and a focus on experiential learning, DU students receive personalized instruction and support from faculty both in and outside the classroom. Both undergraduate and graduate students work with faculty on projects in their fields, including original research that often results in summer-long projects and publications.

A niche for everyone

There are more than 100 student clubs and organizations, so everyone can find a place where they belong at DU. Whether it's exploring passions like sustainability, pursuing hobbies like sewing, or finding camaraderie in the Greek system, there are countless opportunities. One of the largest clubs, the Alpine Club, has been helping students explore the Rocky Mountains since 1928.

Winning sports teams

University of Denver athletes have won 35 NCAA national championships across 18 varsity sports. Among the standouts: the men's hockey team, which has more national championships (10) than any other collegiate hockey program; the ski team, which also sits atop the NCAA's most-titles list (24); and the women's gymnastics team, which earned an NCAA regional title in 2023. Starting in the fall, many of DU's teams will begin competing in the prestigious West Coast Conference.

Exceptional career services

DU is recognized nationally as a leader in career development, ranked #24 in Best Career Services by The Princeton Review. The Career & Professional Development office supports students in countless ways—with individual advising, internship opportunities, campus employment, career fairs, networking events, and more. Faculty offer ongoing support, and students connect with alumni and professional mentors through Crimson Constellation, an online community for professional networking.

Rich traditions

The University offers a series of fun events that bring the community together. There's Hockey Night Lights, during which students camp out for a chance to win tickets to every home hockey game of the season. There's Winter Carnival and its weekend trip to Winter Park Resort, when students get discounted ski lift tickets, lodging, and lessons. And there's May Days, a week of outdoor activities and entertainment to help students enjoy the beautiful Colorado weather and take a break from finals.

Cutting-edge research

DU is one of just a few universities in the Rocky Mountain region recognized as R1 research institutions—a designation bestowed on fewer than 200 schools by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. That means DU has a deep commitment to discovery and innovation. Faculty and staff take pride in providing undergraduate and graduate students with exceptional opportunities for hands-on research, interdisciplinary collaboration, and faculty mentorship.
