Dr. Raychaudhuri attends inaugural visit of Prime Minister Modi at White House
On June 22, Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi was hosted by President Biden and the First Lady at the White House. As the leader of the world’s largest democracy, Prime Minister Modi’s visit to the home of the world’s oldest democracy was historic. The visit centered on multi-sector collaboration between the U.S. and India in fields such as space, technology, quantum, climate change, health and education, among others. DU’s own Dr. Uttiyo Raychaudhuri, vice provost for internationalization, was invited to attend the state visit. As a representative of the Indian diaspora in the United States and a key representative of Indian origin in higher education, Dr. Raychaudhuri himself is an example of the immense cooperation and innovation taking place between the U.S. and India.
India sends the largest group of international students to the US for higher studies, a fact that is evidenced by the many talented and skilled individuals in the US who come from Indian origin. Dr. Raychaudhuri in his work for DU’s Office of Internationalization and as co-founder of the South Asia International Education Network (SouthAsia-IEN)—which aims to serve as a network to build linkages between the US and South Asian countries in higher education—has contributed to many of the goals that this event hoped to celebrate and encourage.
Dr. Raychaudhuri attended the White House inauguration hosted by President Biden for Prime Minster Modi, which was also attended by senior delegates from India and senior representatives from the US Congress. In addition, Dr. Raychaudhuri met with Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif, who serves as co-chair of the US-India congressional caucus, to discuss advancing education in the region and in collaboration with India following the creation of its New Education Policy.
Dr. Raychaudhuri said he felt “an incredible special feeling of privilege and responsibility to represent” while at the White House.
“The atmosphere was pretty electric with the decorations for a state visit and the presence of such a large crowd for the welcome event on the South Lawns,” Raychaudhuri says.
He added that the sense of enthusiasm between the US and India to work together in some of the most pressing areas of worldwide and mutual needs was exciting. Moving forward, Dr. Raychaudhuri highlighted that for DU specifically some significant opportunities have emerged from this US-India collaboration. DU is now partnering with one of the top management schools in India, the Indian Institute of Management, and on several other grant opportunities with the Department of State in the area of internationalization.
Dr. Raychaudhuri has been actively engaged in the field of international education for over two decades. His leadership in education abroad programming has been recognized before this latest invitation to the White House. In both 2012 and 2014, he received the IIE Andrew Heiskell Award for Best Practices and Innovation in International Education.

El Dr. Raychaudhuri asistió a la inauguración en la Casa Blanca ofrecida por el Presidente Biden al Primer Ministro Modi, a la que también asistieron altos delegados de la India y altos representantes del Congreso estadounidense. Además, el Dr. Raychaudhuri se reunió con el representante Ro Khanna, demócrata de California, que copreside el grupo de congresistas EE.UU.-India, para hablar sobre el avance de la educación en la región y en colaboración con la India tras la creación de su Nueva Política Educativa.
El Dr. Raychaudhuri dijo que sintió "un increíble sentimiento especial de privilegio y responsabilidad de representar" durante su estancia en la Casa Blanca.
"El ambiente era bastante eufórico, con la decoración propia de una visita de Estado y la presencia de una multitud tan numerosa para el acto de bienvenida en los jardines del Sur", afirma Raychaudhuri.
Añadió que la sensación de entusiasmo entre EE.UU. e India por trabajar juntos en algunas de las áreas más apremiantes del mundo y las necesidades mutuas era emocionante. De cara al futuro, el Dr. Raychaudhuri destacó que, para DU específicamente, han surgido algunas oportunidades significativas de esta colaboración entre EE.UU. e India. En la actualidad, DU colabora con una de las mejores escuelas de administración de la India, el Instituto Indio de Administración, y en otras oportunidades de subvención con el Departamento de Estado en el sector de la internacionalización.
El Dr. Raychaudhuri lleva más de dos décadas trabajando activamente en el sector de la educación internacional. Su liderazgo en la programación de la educación en el extranjero ha sido reconocido antes de esta última invitación a la Casa Blanca. Tanto en 2012 como en 2014, recibió el Premio Andrew Heiskell del IIE a las mejores prácticas y la innovación en la educación internacional.
