The DU men's hockey team celebrates after winning the National Championship.

This year, the University of Denver athletics program celebrates its 150th anniversary. To mark the occasion, DU is unveiling “A Legacy in the Making: a Decade in Review,” a chronicle highlighting the Pioneers’ success in the last 10 years.

“As a part of our celebration of the 150th anniversary of Denver Athletics, we thought it was an important time to look back on our success from the decade and plan for our legacy with our third strategic plan,” says Peg Bradley-Doppes, vice chancellor for athletics, recreation and Ritchie Center operations. “DU’s Division of Athletics and Recreation serves as an integral part and the front porch of the institution, and has built itself upon 150 years of achieving success the right way.”

Bradley-Doppes released a five-year strategic plan for DU athletics in May. It details an eight-goal system focusing on academic excellence, athletic achievement, student-athlete well-being, equity and inclusion, image and branding, engagement, customer service and financial stewardship.

“A Legacy in the Making” reviews the Pioneers’ national success academically, in individual sports and as a division overall. Since 2007, the Pioneers have captured seven national championships and nine Learfield Sports Division D1-AAA Directors’ Cups. In addition, the program has had 164 All-Americans, and seven athletes have competed in the Olympics. The document also looks back at the division’s fundraising success and what it has meant for the program over the last decade.
