Dear community members,

What a week for the University of Denver! Many congratulations to the DU hockey team who won their record 11th National Championship at the NCAA tournament this past weekend. I applaud our rockstar student-athletes, their coaches, and the staff who made this win possible.

This championship run was special. What stood out most for me was the integrity and character of our student-athletes. They raised each other up, especially during moments when it mattered most. This was not an easy season, nor was it a clear and direct line to victory. The team pulled together through continual collective effort and proved that with challenges, come opportunities. DU’s coaches and students thanked the fans during many post-game interviews. At DU, “team sports” transcends the team itself. There is a collective spirit here that makes this place unique, and you can see that spirit in celebrations by our students, community, and alumni.

One of the many joys of this journey was connecting with the people and families who have supported our students every step of the way. My wife, Maurin, and I had the pleasure of meeting several hockey parents, and I was deeply grateful to see leaders and community members from across Denver and Colorado root for us. From Governor Jared Polis to Mayor Mike Johnston, many prominent leaders congratulated DU and hailed Denver as “Hockey Town, USA.” The Colorado Avalanche team even put the game on in Ball Arena and cheered our team on, showing how we are all One Denver. Across Colorado, people recognize the spirit of DU and the positive impact we make.

Eleven National Championships—record breaking and legendary. This hockey team inspired us, showcasing what our University can do when we push ourselves and believe in our potential. I am so proud of our community, the Athletics staff for their commitment and support, and DU’s Advancement staff who hosted fantastic alumni events in Las Vegas. Congrats again to our entire hockey program. GO PIOS!

With pride and gratitude,
