Dear Colleagues,

In an effort to reflect the increasing scope of diversity and inclusion work on campus, the Office of Diversity and Inclusion (ODI) has been renamed the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (ODEI). The change, approved by Chancellor Haefner, effective immediately.

It is vital for the University of Denver to continue evaluating how the scope of ODEI should transform as unique opportunities and challenges arise. The work of building a diverse, equitable and inclusive campus community is challenging and absolutely essential. It takes dedication, commitment, and continual self-reflection. Renaming ODEI reflects DU’s continued dedication to embrace these challenges to make lasting impact internally and externally.

In addition, to provide overall support to ODEI, Dr. Tom Romero has been promoted to Associate Provost for Inclusive Excellence Research and Curriculum Initiatives. Tom previously served as assistant provost and has been a faculty member in the Sturm College of Law since 2010. His efforts during the spring and summer upheld DU’s promise to fully support ODEI’s preparation for the appointment of an interim vice chancellor for diversity and inclusion in anticipation of Frank Tuitt’s impending sabbactical leave. With the half-time appointment of Art Jones on Aug. 1 in the interim vice chancellor role, Tom continues to provide transitional support while a national search is conducted to identify a permanent vice chancellor.

Tom has served for six years as assistant provost and has nurtured the highly successful IRISE program, while increasing its scope, impact, and size. Currently, the work of IRISE is advanced by a vibrant postdoctoral fellows program, a cohort of community-based scholars, a visiting professor position, a set of graduate assistants, and an array of DU affiliate faculty members whose research and teaching align with IRISE’s mission. Tom is a nationally known scholar on the history of race in Colorado and the American West, with a track record of deep engagement on issues of diversity in higher education. He understands the DU community, and has the experience and skill set to serve as a key leader on the ODEI team during the transition period and beyond.

Please join me in congratulating Tom on his promotion to associate provost.

Best,

Corinne Lengsfeld

Interim Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor
