Dear DU Community Members,

It is with great excitement that I welcome our new Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Mary Clark who will join us tomorrow for her first day at the University of Denver!

In April, I shared the news that the search committee chose Mary for this pivotal leadership role. In that message, I outlined her many qualifications, skills, and accomplishments, including her ability to provide collaborative leadership, her dedication to diversity and equity, and her many years of experience implementing strategic planning goals related to teaching and learning, inclusive pedagogy, and experiential and interdisciplinary education.

I am enthusiastically looking forward to working with Mary. She brings a fresh perspective from nearly nine years of holding leadership positions at American University Washington College of Law and American University, which aligns with DU in so many ways. As a tenured faculty member at American University’s Washington College of Law, she developed a deep knowledge of governance issues. She is sharp-minded with a singular ability to ask the important questions. She uses her background in higher education law and legal ethics to think critically about complex issues, which will undoubtedly be an asset to DU, our faculty, and our students. Importantly, she is deeply committed to—and has a proven track record of achieving goals related to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The role of provost shapes the foundation of a university, academics are truly our heart and soul. We are fortunate to have someone up to that noble task in Mary Clark. Please join me in welcoming her to DU, and to Denver.

Sincerely,
Jeremy Haefner, Chancellor
