Medical Options
After an assault, it is important to seek medical attention. You might not have any visible injuries, but pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, and internal injuries are possible after a sexual assault.
Seeking medical treatment does not mean that you need to report your assault to law enforcement or EOIX. You can also seek medical attention after your assault without any evidence collection.
However, you can also have evidence collected and still not pursue an investigation.
There are three types of reporting regarding evidence collection:
- Anonymously - Evidence is collected, but the survivor’s name is not included. The evidence is only stored.
- Medical Reporting - Evidence is collected, and the survivor’s name is included; however, the survivor does not wish to pursue an investigation at this time. The evidence is stored.
- Law Enforcement Reporting - Evidence is collected, tested, and given to law enforcement for investigation with the survivor’s name and permission.
What does evidence collection entail?
Your medical exam will be conducted by a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE). SANE is a registered nurse with a specialization in medical forensic care. The examination consists of a head-to-toe physical assessment. The nurse will photograph any bruises, scratches, and/or cuts, and collect evidence such as blood, sperm, saliva, hair, and/or skin cells. You can choose to decline any part of the examination without question.
Evidence collection is only possible within 120 hours of your assault. In order to preserve evidence, it is important to avoid bathing, removing objects (tampons, condoms), smoking, and combing your hair. However, your need to perform these actions after an assault is absolutely okay, and you can still have an examination.
Survivors are not charged for the cost of the SANE examination but could incur expenses related to treatment of injuries. CAPE offers financial support and can discuss any questions or concerns; an advocate can also accompany you to the hospital to receive the examination if desired.

The following locations accept walk-in patients:

Campus Safety and CAPE offer transportation to/from the hospital. You are not required to make a report to receive transportation.
