Reporting Options
Reporting Options
Sexual violence can be reported at any time. The University of Denver offers confidential and non-confidential reporting options.
What do these mean?
Confidential reporting means that you can speak openly about your assault without any other action being taken. Meeting with a confidential advocate is not a formal report and will not initiate a disclosure to Campus Safety or the Office of Equal Opportunity & Title IX. Your choice, agency, and wishes are always respected.
Confidential options include:
The Center for Advocacy, Prevention, & Empowerment (CAPE)
- Accessing academic accommodations or safe housing.
- Financial support through the CAPE Survivor Fund.
- Filing for a Civil Protection Order (off-campus) or a No-Contact Order (on-campus).
- Arranging for medical care, including accompanying you to a SANE and forensic evidence collection medical exam at the HCC or Denver Health.
- Connecting you with counseling services on campus or in the community.
- Reporting to the police or Title IX and navigating the process if desired.
- Simply being a safer, confidential space to talk.
CAPE is available in-person between Monday through Friday: 8:00am – 5:00pm. Their office phone number is (303) 871-3853, or you can email them at CAPE@du.edu.
The Health and Counseling Center (HCC)
The HCC is another confidential source that offers counseling services. You can schedule an appointment through your MyHealth Portal.
If you would prefer not to speak in-person, you can opt for counseling services through the app My SSP: Student Support Program . After entering some basic information about yourself, the app allows you to call or text with a professional counselor for immediate support.
After hours, the HCC places a counselor on-call who is available to support you through any mental health crisis. The counselor-on-call can be contacted at (303) 871-2205.
The Blue Bench
The Blue Bench is a community resource that is not affiliated with the University of Denver. The Blue Bench is available 24/7 to offer support and provide services to survivors of sexual assault. Some of these services include:
-
The Blue Bench Hotline: (303) 322-7273
-
Medical and Victim Advocates
-
Individual or Group Therapy
You can find all their services and read more about the Blue Bench here.
Non-confidential reporting are resources that are required to act under university policy and procedures. These options include:
Campus Safety at University of Denver
If you choose to notify Campus Safety, we will connect you with a Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) officer to meet with you and speak about your assault. You are not required to provide your name or any identifying information when you speak with the SART officer. You can choose to speak with us immediately after the assault or whenever you are ready. You may choose what you share with us and are not required to share specific details; however, this might limit the University’s response.
There is no deadline to report. After our SART officer speaks with you, we will share your information with the Office of Equal Opportunity & Title IX (EOIX) and Denver Police; however, you can choose not to pursue an investigation from either.
EOIX will ask whether you want to pursue an investigation and will honor your preference whenever possible; however, there may be circumstances when EOIX must initiate an investigation because of the health and safety risks to the survivor or the DU community.
Denver Police will not take any action; they will only be made aware of the incident.
If you decide that you would like to pursue a criminal investigation, we can request Denver Police to respond, or you can report to them at your own time. Lastly, we will notify the Center for Advocacy, Prevention, & Empowerment (CAPE) of your assault, and they will reach out to address your wellbeing.
You can contact Campus Safety at (303) 871-2334 or by email: SART@du.edu
Denver Police
Reporting to Denver Police is not the same as pressing charges. You can choose to report to simply inform the police of your assault, or you can report to take legal action. However, please know that an investigator assigned to your case may deem that no charges will be filed based on the information they gather.
Denver Police has a specialized Victim Assistance Unit (VAU) to support survivors while they undergo the criminal justice process.
You can contact Denver Police at (720) 913-1300 or make a report in-person. The nearest police station to the University of Denver is the District Three station located at 1625 South University Boulevard.
Equal Opportunity and Title IX
EOIX handles the internal investigations for the University of Denver, including reports of sexual and gender-based violence, and takes appropriate action to address the safety of survivors and the community. While EOIX is not a confidential resource, your privacy will be respected throughout the investigation. You can complete an incident report online here, or you can contact any of the following personnel at (303) 871-7016:
- Emily Babb, Associate Vice Chancellor for EOIX & Title IX Coordinator, 303-871-3142
- Molly Hooker, Deputy Title IX Coordinator, 303-871-2302
