Dear Residential Students,

We hope that you are doing okay during such a busy and challenging time! We know that with the updates from the Chancellor, you likely have many questions. Be sure to utilize our website for additional updates and answers.

Please review the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) below to guide you through Housing and Residential Educations policies and procedures over the next several days.

If I am moving out in the next few days, do I need to take all my belongings with me?

  • Yes, students who are moving out need to take all belongings with them.  This is a change given our new decision to go fully remote for Spring quarter.
    • Storage Options for students who cannot take all their belongings with them:
  • The University does not have on-campus storage options for students at this time. Students who would like to utilize off-campus storage options, can reach out to the following storage companies that are offering free or reduced storage rates: U-Haul, SquirrelBox Storage, CSS Storage, College Truckers. More information can be found here: https://www.du.edu/housing/resources/covid-19.html
  • If you have questions or need additional assistance, please contact housing@du.edu for help.

Do I have to leave my residence hall or apartment?

  • If you are able to leave campus, we ask that you do so as soon as possible. You still need to complete the Housing and Travel survey emailed to you, if you have not already.
  • Residents with special circumstances that prevent them from leaving campus may be allowed to stay on campus on a case-by-case basis. This must be requested via your personalized Housing and Travel survey link and reviewed and approved by an HRE staff member.

What about packages and mail?

  • Students who are moving out should forward their mail by logging in to their PioneerWeb account and navigate to the Student tab. From there, they can update their My Person Profile (located in the upper-right corner of the page).
  • Students can also submit a mail forwarding request with the local Post Office for a $1.05 fee. To get started, visit the USPS website.

If I am leaving campus and checking out completely, will I be reimbursed housing and meal plan fees?

  • The University will be working with students to update their billing for spring quarter housing and meal plan. This will take a little bit of time as the university is currently working through this process.

I left campus before I was able to pack my belongings or return my keys. What do I do?

  • By Friday, March 27, Housing and Residential Education will begin sharing information to help all residential students access belongings they may have left in their spaces. These options may include allowing some students to return to campus prior to the end of the spring quarter to retrieve their belongings and/or making arrangements for HRE to store student belongings long-term.
  • HRE may need to pack your belongings. If that is the case, we will call and let you know.
  • We encourage all residents who have left campus but still have their room/mailbox keys to return them to HRE by mail to the following address:

Housing and Residential Education

C/O Kyle Evans

2050 E Evans Ave

Driscoll South 30

Denver, CO 80210

I already left campus but left items behind. What happens to my belongings?

  • By Friday, March 27, Housing and Residential Education will begin sharing specific information about plans to help all residential students access belongings they may have left in their spaces. These options may include allowing some students to return to campus prior to the end of the spring quarter to retrieve their belongings and/or making arrangements for HRE to store student belongings.
  • HRE may need to pack your belongings. If that is the case, we will call and let you know.
  • HRE’s main focus at this time is to help residents depart campus and stay healthy and we appreciate your patience as we continue to address all of our student needs during this unprecedented time.

My car is still on campus and I’m unable to come pick it up. Can it stay there?

  • If you left your car in the lot you were assigned with an official parking pass, you should be just fine.
  • Please contact DU Parking Services at parking@du.edu for all other questions regarding parking.

NEW Move Out Process

Checking Out of Your Room:

  • Pack all items in your room. If needed, pick up empty boxes from the front desk. Front desk staff will label your boxes with your name, ID number, and phone number.
  • Empty and clean your fridge/freezer and microwave and throw out your trash.
  • Unplug all electronics except your fridge.
  • Leave your room clean and clear of all belongings.
  • Once you have packed your belongings, go to the front desk and request to check out with an HRE staff member. An HRE staff member will observe and note the condition of your room/apartment and collect your room, mailbox, and storage keys (if applicable) from you and lock the door. This will complete your checkout and you can depart from the building.
  • Make sure to change your mailing address for all subscriptions and time-sensitive mail.

I have been approved to stay, will campus be open for me?

  • Yes, support offices will be able to serve you remotely.
  • While buildings will post new hours of operation, your student ID should give you access to most spaces that remain open during spring break and spring quarter.
  • Dining will be available as well, though in limited capacities.
  • We will follow up with all students remaining next week and articulate clearly what you can expect and how you can seek support.
  • Keep in mind that if you remain, you are committed to sleeping in your room each night. Any travel away from campus, longer than a day trip, will place you at risk of not being allowed back into the residential community. We are taking the safety and health of the remaining students VERY seriously.

Thank you for your patience during such a challenging time for us all.

Sincerely,

Housing & Residential Education Team
