About this Program

As the conversation around the global climate has overtaken both the public and scientific spheres, the need for trained environmental scientists has grown rapidly. The BA in environmental science covers a range of environmental issues, from climate change, air and water quality and resource preservation to sustainable development and waste management. Our program is founded on a hands-on approach to scientific exploration, meaning you'll have the chance to participate in field studies and travel to diverse locations to gather a truly expansive knowledge of environmental science.

As you learn about issues of environmental preservation and discover solutions to challenging global problems, you'll have the opportunity to explore a variety of other disciplines. The BA program is flexible and allows you to take courses across other fields to complement your degree. With the environmental science BA, students have gone on to careers in conservation, resource management, policy and many other fields with a focus on the health and preservation of the natural world.

Environmental Chemistry

Many environmental problems are chemically related and solving them requires an application of chemical knowledge. The University of Denver's bachelor of science in environmental chemistry is designed for students pursuing careers in fields related to environmental areas. The degree requirements include a minor in geographic information systems, biology or sustainability to ensure a strong interdisciplinary background. Among the many post-graduation options for students in this program are graduate school in environmental science or work in a variety of environmentally-related fields.

With a minimum of 47 credit hours in chemistry, students take general, organic, physical and aquatic chemistry courses, as well as chemistry labs that put students in front of the latest equipment. Environmental chemistry students also take classes in biology, geography, calculus and physics. Along the way, students work in small class settings with internationally recognized faculty researchers dedicated to improving the world with their knowledge and expertise.

The University of Denver's Bachelor of Arts program in ecology and biodiversity offers students a cross-disciplinary focus on these two fields. Students complete 44 credit hours of biology coursework. The BA degree allows students flexibility to combine their interests in biology with other disciplines such as law, policy or business.

Our biological sciences department provides specialized upper-level coursework taught by active researchers in the discipline, along with the opportunity to collaborate with faculty on in-depth research. Students can access cutting-edge research and go to several exciting field sites. Research opportunities encompass plant-insect interaction, ecology of invasive species, and forest ecology and evolutionary biology. The University of Denver's undergraduate program in biological sciences, which includes options for both a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science, offers students the skills and knowledge for pursuing a wide range of career and graduate options. The BS degree offers students a more intensive science and math experience, requiring a chemistry minor, a second minor of the student's choosing and one year each of both mathematics and physics. Students can choose to specialize in sub-disciplines within cell and molecular biology or ecology and evolutionary biology.

Our specialized upper-level coursework is taught by active researchers in the discipline and we provide extensive opportunities for in-depth research with faculty. Graduates can leave prepared for jobs or graduate work in a wide range of life sciences disciplines, including cell and molecular biology, neuroscience, and ecology and evolutionary biology. Wellness is a unifying concept that weaves together many different disciplines, curricula, and facets of experience to promote conscious growth and dynamic balance in life. The mental health and wellness minor is designed to study a multidimensional model of wellness, including emotional, intellectual, spiritual, physical, community, multicultural and social wellness. An undergraduate who obtains the minor in wellness will have an increased ability to navigate the health care, wellness and corporate arenas, which are increasingly considering preventative, proactive approaches to health.

Students in the program delve into various approaches that prepare them to have a foundation for healthy living. You'll explore Western medicine and various other paradigms of healing, gaining a breadth of exposure to numerous different approaches to wellness. The minor is suited for individuals who want to support their major with a balanced academic and experiential emphasis on the practice of wellness.

Valuable to both U.S.- and foreign-trained graduate students, the LLM in Global Natural Resources, Energy, and Environmental Law at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law provides a world-leading course of graduate study and experience for students seeking greater understanding of these issues, and their associated challenges and opportunities. Students can immerse themselves in classes on mining natural resources, and energy law, as well as skills-based classes to enhance their transactional skills for practice.

  • Courses in mining law, natural resources law, energy law, water law, and sustainability.
  • Experiential education with opportunities for learning critical skills for practice and externships.
  • Foreign-trained graduate students will also have access to ESL support alongside introductory classes on the American legal system designed to build on their prior legal experience.

Beginning Fall 2024, students enrolled in the LLM in Global Natural Resources, Energy, and Environmental Law who are eligible for and seeking to sit for a bar exam in the United States after graduation — and who have not previously been licensed to practice law in any U.S. jurisdiction — will be provided with Themis Bar Review’s complete post-graduation bar review course designed specifically for foreign-trained LLM students at no cost, completely funded by the University of Denver Sturm College of Law. About this Program

Qualified University of Denver (DU) students can accelerate their legal education through our bachelor/JD Program. Through this program, students earn their undergraduate degree and their JD in six years rather than the standard seven years. DU undergraduates can apply to the program in their junior year; high-achieving high school students who've been admitted to DU can also apply. Students in the bachelor/JD Program begin JD studies in their fourth year at DU. They earn their bachelor degree after one year of law school and receive their JD two years later.

The JD program provides hands-on, student-centered legal education, as well as seven academic specialties that allow students to tailor their education to their career goals. Courses on the lawyering process, constitutional law and others provide a solid legal knowledge foundation. In addition, the JD program builds practice-ready skills through legal public service and advanced legal writing. Students also receive training in the professional skills needed in the legal profession, including trial advocacy, client communication, document drafting and more.

Public Policy (MPP)

About this Program

The master's in public policy (MPP) program teaches students to practice public policy in the real world through developing skills such as problem identification, analysis of solutions, writing, advocacy and persuasion. Our faculty members, who have practical policy experience, include a former three-term governor of Colorado, a former federal fraud prosecutor and senior manager for a federal regulatory agency and the chief budget officer for Colorado. Students will learn alongside renowned policy experts and policy makers both in traditional classroom settings and in intensive seminars. Featured speakers will come from top think tanks and policy-making bodies from Denver and beyond.

Students from all undergraduate programs and backgrounds are welcome, as there are no prerequisites for MPP courses. In the final year of their studies, students apply their skills to the real world by completing a capstone project analyzing a specific policy and potential solutions. Alumni hold positions locally, nationally and internationally, working for government, nonprofit organizations and private businesses, leveraging the network of one of the nation's leading schools for international studies.
