DU'S PHYSICS AND ASTRONOMY DEPARTMENT HOSTS ANDREW GEMANT AWARD WINNER LISA RANDALL – APRIL 15, 7 P.M.

(April 9, 2013) The Department of Physics and Astronomy is hosting renowned physicist and writer Lisa Randall. The professor of science from Harvard University will deliver a public lecture at 7 p.m. Monday, April 15 at DU's Davis Auditorium. Her lecture, "Truth and Beauty and Other Scientific Misconceptions," is free and open to the public.

"I want to stress that this is a great opportunity not just for Physics & Astronomy students but for all DU students and community members," says Jennifer Hoffman, assistant professor of Physics and Astronomy at DU. "Dr. Randall is one of today's leading physicists, and her work is at the forefront of scientists' efforts to understand the nature of the particles and forces that make up our universe. But she's not just interested in science for its own sake; she's also interested in how people think about and relate to science in society."

Hoffman says Randall is dedicated to talking about scientific research in an approachable way and explaining why it matters in our everyday lives. "Her lecture will be fascinating to anyone who is curious about things like the Higgs boson, dark matter and the Big Bang."

Randall has written two acclaimed popular science books: Warped Passages: Unraveling the Mysteries of the Universe's Hidden Dimensions and Knocking on Heaven's Door: How Physics and Scientific Thinking Illuminate the Universe and the Modern World. She will be signing copies of her books after her talk. She has made numerous radio and TV appearances, including The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.

While Randall is in town, she will receive the Andrew Gemant Award from the American Institute of Physics. The award recognizes the accomplishments of a person who has made significant contributions to the cultural, artistic, or humanistic dimension of physics.

Prior to and after the talk, the DU Society of Physics Students will conduct live physics demonstrations in the lobby of Davis Auditorium. For more information about the event, visit the Physics & Astronomy webpage.

BOOK DISCUSSION: THE MAN WHO QUIT MONEY – APRIL 14, NOON

(April 9, 2013) In 2000, Daniel Suelo left his life savings-all 30 dollars of it-in a phone booth. He has lived without money-and with a newfound sense of freedom and security-ever since.

The Man Who Quit Money is an account of how one man learned to live, sanely and happily, without earning, receiving or spending a single cent. Suelo doesn't pay taxes, accept food stamps or welfare. He lives in caves in the Utah Canyonlands, forages wild foods and gourmet discards. He no longer even carries an ID card. Yet he manages to amply fulfill not only the basic human needs for shelter, food and warmth but, to an enviable degree, the universal desire for companionship, purpose and spiritual engagement. In retracting the surprising path and guiding philosophy that led Suelo into this way of life, author Mark Sundeen raises provocative and riveting questions about the decisions we all make, by default or by design, about how we live-and how we might live better.

April 14, noon-1 p.m., Gottesfeld Room, Anderson Academic Commons
