21ST ANNUAL EGG HUNT – MARCH 30, 11 A.M.

The Staff Advisory Council invites you and your families to the 21st Annual Egg Hunt on Saturday, March 30. This event lasts five minutes or less, so be on time! There will be candy and prizes for children and adults. The committee worked hard to appropriately allocate prizes for each age group; however, we still request that parents double check the age appropriateness for their child.

Saturday March 30, 11:00 a.m., Harper Humanities Garden (west of Mary Reed), rain, snow or shine!
Bring your own basket. Faculty and staff without children are welcome to participate.
Free parking will be available in the H1 and H2 lots as well as the metered parking spaces in lot 304.

R.A.D. SELF-DEFENSE CLASS – MARCH 29-31

(March 12, 2013) R.A.D. (Rape Aggression Defense) is a women-only self-defense class offered throughout the United States and Canada, primarily on college campuses. The program is designed to develop and enhance self-defense options so they become viable for women being attacked. The R.A.D. program at DU is taught by Campus Safety officers who have attended vigorous training and are certified R.A.D. instructors. These classes are offered on a monthly basis during the academic year and are open to students, staff, faculty and community members. The upcoming March session will be free of charge to all participants. If you would like to attend the course, please register online ASAP as space is limited.

"BEAR AMBASSADORS LEADING THE JOURNEY OF A THOUSAND MILES" – MARCH 27, 2 P.M.

The Institute for Human-Animal Connection (IHAC) presents: "Bear Ambassadors Leading the Journey of a Thousand Miles – bringing moon bear to life and ending bear farming in Asia," presented by Jill Robinson MBE, Dr.med.vet. h.c.

IHAC, an Institute of the Graduate School of Social Work, addresses the critically important relationships between animals and people through research, training and education, technical assistance and advocacy. Multidisciplinary in focus, the institute is the first program of its kind within a human services academic setting.

"THE ROLE OF SOCIAL FACTORS IN BREAST CANCER DISPARITIES" – MARCH 26, 11 A.M.

The GSSW Lecture Series presents "The Role of Social Factors in Breast Cancer Disparities" by Dr. Sarah Gehlert. Gehlert is the E. Desmond Lee Professor of Racial and Ethnic Diversity at the George Warren Brown School of Social Work, and in the Department of Surgery of the School of Medicine. She is also the co-program leader of the Prevention and Control Program of the Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center and the training program director of the Program for the Elimination of Cancer Disparities.

Tuesday, March 26, 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m., Boettcher Foundation Community Room, Craig Hall. The lecture is free and open to the public, but registration is required.

REMINDER: ANDERSON ACADEMIC COMMONS GRAND OPENING – MARCH 25, 11 A.M.

The grand opening of the new Anderson Academic Commons is almost here. The ribbon cutting will kick off the festivities at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 25 at the south entrance. Everyone is invited. Specialized tours and other events will take place throughout opening week.

In the third of four lectures in the 2012-2013 GSSW (Graduate School of Social Work) Lecture Series, J. David Hawkins, PhD, will speak on "Prevention in Schools and Communities: Taking Advances in Prevention Science to Scale." Hawkins is the endowed professor of prevention and founding director of the Social Development Research Group at the School of Social Work, University of Washington, Seattle. His research focuses on understanding and preventing child and adolescent health and behavior problems.

FIDDLER ON THE ROOF - Feb. 28- MARCH 10

The DU Department of Theatre and the Lamont School of Music present Fiddler On The Roof. In the little village of Anatevka, Tevye, a poor dairyman, tries to instill in his five daughters the traditions of his tight-knit Jewish community in the face of changing social mores and the growing anti-Semitism of Czarist Russia. The universal theme of tradition cuts across barriers of race, class, nationality and religion, leaving audiences crying tears of laughter, joy and sadness.

MARCH 2 - STURM COLLEGE OF LAW HOSTS THE INTERNATIONAL LAW ASSOCIATION WESTERN REGIONAL CONFERENCE

The International Legal Studies Program (ILSP) at Denver Law will host the Western Regional Conference of the American Branch of the International Law Association (ABILA), "International Law and Human Security in the 21st Century" on March 2 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. University of Denver faculty and staff may attend the conference free of charge. 

"Human Security" is a concept which is having an increasing impact on economic, social and political policies. During this year's ILW-West Conference, distinguished international law scholars and practitioners will discuss the importance and the role of "Human Security" as it relates to international environmental law, trade, human rights and international criminal law.

18th Annual Women's Conference to feature keynote speaker Denise Maes

The 18th Annual University of Denver Women's Conference will be held on Friday, March 1, featuring keynote speaker Denise Maes, director of public policy for the ACLU of Colorado and former White House staff member.

Maes' passion for civil rights and social justice has steered her years of experience in nonprofit, activism, policy strategies and protection of civil rights.

This year's conference theme, "Harnessing the Power of Title IX," will examine the impacts of Title IX on the past, how it currently is utilized and how we may harness its power for the ongoing advancement of women in the United States.

Please join us for this celebration and examination of the groundbreaking legislation known as Gender Equity in Education, 40 years after its passage. This tradition gathers student, staff, faculty, women and men allies to learn and share in the spirit of unity to advance the success of women at the University of Denver.

Programming will include workshops and presentations on recognizing and addressing inequities, antidiscrimination, women in leadership in higher education, and women in athletics, math, and science.
