Back to School

Former DU adjunct professor Ann Obermann earned her PhD through DU's Graduate School of Social Work and is gearing up to make a difference in her community. Her goal is to take the dedicated energy of GSSW into the classroom as she prepares the next generation of social workers to face the challenges ahead.

Success on All Fronts

Coming off back-to-back undefeated regular seasons and an appearance in the final four, the DU men's soccer team enters the new season ranked No. 3 in the country. In addition to their remarkable success on the field, they also have the No. 1 GPA average among college soccer teams, an honor they've held for the last two years.

Prepared to Help

DU doctoral student Josh Burg credits DU's Graduate School of Professional Psychology with equipping him for a career in helping people navigate life's problems. “I just remember … in these group interviews with other students from different programs, I feel like I’m way better prepared for this than [they] are,” Burg says.

Policy for Social Change

DU undergrad Morgan Smith saw the truth firsthand: local policymaking is the best way to enact social change, an idea he approached from multiple angles. “I want to be involved in...policymaking with a special focus on urban inequality," Smith says, particularly "education equity and local economic development."

Traveling Through History

DU graduate Katie Bokenkamp recently completed two honors theses, one in history and one in Italian. Our study abroad programs enhanced both of her achievements. Bokenkamp is thankful for the many opportunities she had to follow her curiosity. Her advice to other DU students is simple: Give yourself permission to explore.

Tennis Duo Makes History

University of Denver women’s tennis team members Maureen Slattery and Julia O’Loughlin became the first All-Americans in program history after their 2017 season. The teammates, roommates and close friends also made it to the quarterfinals of this year’s NCAA doubles tournament, the deepest run of any tandem in DU history.

Grad Students Inspired

"Be purposeful" was the theme at DU's graduate Commencement. In his speech, Vista Equity CEO Robert Smith encouraged graduates to think and do, not observe. “You owe the world your focus," he said, "Be purposeful, be hopeful, be flexible in your views, but stubborn in your values. Contribute your brilliance.”

Future Takes Flight at DU

DU's Unmanned Systems Research Institute is attempting to improve UAV technology by allowing for shorter takeoffs while increasing payload and overall flight times. Their ultimate goal is to program an aircraft to perform multiple tasks, and if needed, change the mission of the aircraft while it's in flight.

Teacher Residencies

DU researchers and outside partners teamed up to study what makes teacher residencies effective as a strategy and how to fund their most important elements. Dean of our Morgridge College of Education Karen Riley is one of the primary researchers on the project, which will analyze data from a range of residency programs.

New Spin on Computers

New research from Professor Barry Zink and a team of DU physicists has the potential to serve as the foundation for next-generation computer technology. The team is exploring the field of spintronics in the hopes of controlling the natural spin of the electron to the benefit of electronic devices.
